Can You Dig It?

I've been turned onto some great stuff lately, despite the fact that I've become an overworked hermit.

>>Claire posted about Amy Winehouse and her performance at SxSW, so I'm adding a file of her claim to fame, "Rehab." A co-worker actually mentioned this song to me a couple of weeks ago and I had no idea what he was talking about. I finally listened to it, and to tell the truth, I'm not really into it that much. Yeah, she has a thing going on with her vocals, and this song is catchy and kitsch, but I just can't grab it. Here it is for you:

Amy Winehouse - "Rehab"

>>My fabulous friend, FAB, went on and on during a Gmail Chat last week about this really "gay" song by this dude Mika. She directed me to her MySpace profile to check it out, and I'll admit, I refreshed the page. Like 5 times. I don't know why. Wait, yes, I do. It's like there's this strangely warm "I want to dance in my undergarments and sing into my curling iron" thing going on. You can't really ignore it.

Mika - "Grace Kelly"

>>I've been in this mood lately where I have been drawn to poppy sounding dance tracks. Maybe it's because they're uplifting and normally have lyrical content that's somewhat angry in nature. That's why this whole Dead Disco revolution is taking my ears to a whole new level of happiness.

Dead Disco - "The Treatment"

>>A dude I know had mentioned a couple weeks ago that he wanted to check out the Rosebuds at the EARL, which was ironic since Beach House was playing the same show, and I've been wanting to catch them. Unfortch, the Rosebuds cancelled, so I ended up bailing as well, but I decided to check out their tunes, and whoa! I think every person I know who has given their approval happen to come from a completely different "place" with what they listen to. That's the spectrum they cover. This is an older song, but I heart it so so so much.

The Rosebuds - "I Better Run"

>>I remember several months ago going to see She Wants Revenge at the EARL, and the headlining band was Electric 6. I think I was irritated by the 99X doucheheads that were packed in the EARL that night. Too irritated to stay for the entire set of Electric 6. But nevertheless, they'll be back April 4th at the EARL,once again. I've been digging this track for many months now.

Electric 6 - "Dance Epidemic"

>>I was getting all sentimental with a little Joni Mitchell on the Internets one day, and Elizabeth Elkins from the Swear mentioned to me that Tori Amos covers "A Case of You." She's not the only one who does this, but I was listening to it today, and I got all sentimental again. That song is the poo, and I'm posting the file in anticipation of Tori's new release, American Doll Posse, which is looking like a huge showing of marketing brilliance already.

Tori Amos - "A Case of You"

>>And finally, Ally wrote me this cute message the other day about how she heard Asobi Seksu's cover of "Then He Kissed Me," and that she immediately thought about me. I thought that was adorable, given the circumstances of why she thought about I'm going to put both the original and the cover here for you. Seksu's cover is a live version, but the quality doesn't completely suck ass.

Asobi Seksu - "Then He Kissed Me"

The Crystals - "Then He Kissed Me"

In local news:

If you're not busy and happen to be around the area of Vinyl on Thursday, March 29th, you should go and check out the Beggars's Guild. They're super duper awesome, as documented about the Internets.

Head over to Vinyl again on Friday, March 30th, to see The Judies, too, because they kick ass and you'll want to have Warren's babies by the time he's done rocking your face off.

The excitement ensues on Saturday night, March 31st, at Lenny's with Snowden and Variac.

Oh, and Rantings of Eva posted a new song on their page and it's by far my favorite in their catalog. Listen to it. It's called "The Only One."

Go forth and prosper. You have plenty of music homework to take care of!

Thank you!
I'd heard that Amy Winehouse song about a month ago (but never caught the artist name), and every time I ask about it at Criminal, they insist that I must be thinking of Lily Allen...

Anybody who sells you a Lily Allen CD should be badly beaten, Todd.

How can you not like Winehouse, Leah? I heard some of the album and it doesn't translate as much as it does live . . .

Well, I don't know. I really hear the Billie Holiday influence, but I just can't love it!

This might have something to with it too:

claire, i'm with you on lily allen.

i've tried and tried to dig it, but her performance at centerstage just left me asking, "so is that it?" cute girl, but needs to get her shit together.
